BrightSource is commercializing technology and developing projects for utility-scale power production using concentrated solar thermal energy.
Brightsource’s corporate headquarter is located in Oakland, California. The company’s system is based on proven power tower technology where thousands of small mirrors reflect sunlight onto a boiler on top of a tower to produce high temperature steam. The steam is then piped to a conventional turbine, which generates electricity.
BrightSource's proprietary technology is designed to offer the highest operating efficiencies and lowest capital costs in the industry. BrightSource now has more than 2.6 GW of power under contract, including the two largest solar power agreements ever.
ECM invested in the company in 2008.
Co-investors include VantagePoint Venture Partners, Google.org, BP Alternative Energy, Chevron Technology Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DBL Investors, Morgan Stanley and Black River.
